About

2012-04-05 09.16.09J.D. Cunegan is known for his unique writing style, a mixture of murder mystery and superhero epic that introduces the reader to his comic book-inspired storytelling and fast-paced prose. A 2006 graduate of Old Dominion University, Cunegan has an extensive background in journalism, a lengthy career in media relations, and a lifelong love for writing. Cunegan lives in Hampton, Virginia, and next to books, his big passion in life in auto racing. When not hunched in front of a keyboard or with his nose stuck in a book, Cunegan can probably be found at a race track or watching a race on TV.

But why do we need scissors?

Because I’m a fan of obscure pop culture references; this one in particular relates back to the classic videogame Metal Gear Solid 2. Late in that game, the Colonel starts spouting off all kinds of nonsense, a glitch in the proverbial AI, and at one point, he blurts out, “I need scissors! 61!”

Taking that reference, I once formed INS Komix, an independent comic book studio that was set to publish such titles as Bounty and Notna. But somewhere along the way, I became a much better writer than an artist, and my comic books became novels. INS (I Need Scissors) still exists, and I hope one day to be able to use it as my own publishing outlet.

“I hear it’s amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!”
